Video of the Week - Are You a Slasher?
Hello! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed or get updates via email. Thanks for visiting!
Most real estate professionals I meet are slashers. That is they don’t do just one thing. They’re a real estate broker/investor or real estate broker/retail shop owner etc. Get it - the “/” slash?
Slashers are people who have multiple parallel careers whereas a moonlighter has a side gig they work on after hours. One of the authors gives examples of lawyers turned writers & coaches (including herself), a teacher with a modeling career, a computer programmer who also directs a theater, a lawyer who’s also a Baptist minister, Sanjay Gupta, the CNN health correspondent who also does surgery a few times a month, and the list goes on and on.
This is a rather long video(56min) but if you’re trying to play the slasher game it’s worth a look.

Video of the Week - Kick Your Own Ass
Here’s a 2 minute video from one of my favorite authors, Jeffery Gitomer. His get-real approach to business and sales is extremely refreshing. This should be required reading for all real estate professionals.
(Click here if you can’t see the video.)
If you don’t have any of his books, do yourself a favor and pick up a few. I promise you’ll get a ton out of them.
Pick up a few today!

Video of the Week - Getting Things Done
Ok it’s the second half of January - how are all the New Year’s resolutions coming along?
If your desk still looks the same, your inbox is still full and your still trying to get it together here is a lifesaver. This guy changed my life a few years ago and his GTD (Getting Things Done) system is sweeping across the globe. This is a fantastic overview video featuring David Allen himself (the creator of GTD) giving a talk at Google.
The video is 45 minutes. If you’ve got a ton on your plate and really want to move the ball forward this year this approach will certainly help.
(Can’t see the video? Click here)
The one aspect I really like about GTD is you can implement most of the system immediately and receive immediate benefit.
For more info check out these GTD resources:
Buy the Getting Things Done book.

Video of the Week - The Science of Real Estate
Note: Email subscribers may have to visit the site to view the video.
My take on this is to question conventional thinking (which I think you should be doing all the time anyway). Just because you’ve always done something a certain way doesn’t mean it’s still a valid method. It’s hard to argue with their data. Many times we have assumptions that need to be disgarded or at the very least seriously questioned when the data proves otherwise.
I applaud these guys for sharing their data and causing conversations about what their data means.

Video of the week - Malcolm Gladwell - What we can learn from spaghetti sauce
We’re introducing a new feature today. Each week, we’ll post a video that brings insight to aspects such as relationships, marketing and business. Some might be short, some might be long but we’ll try to post videos that bring a new perspective to your business and how you see the world.
This week’s video features Malcom Gladwell, author of the Tipping Point and Blink. It’s about 17 minutes long.
In this presentation Malcom Gladwell follows the career of a food industry consultant who uncovered a key secret to what eaters like. Running huge focus groups to find customers’ truest tastes, Gladwell’s hero draws a radical conclusion, an epiphany that has defined food marketing ever since.
In thinking about this video in terms of real estate, it’s evident that much of the design and marketing in Steamboat Springs has become very homogenized. The horses, ropes, barns, cowboys, rusted roofs, etc. all have become “western” elements that we think people want. Developments, spec homes and retail shops get the “western” treatment and get put on the market. What this video tells us is that there may be other very successful options that aren’t being considered. Focus groups may not have the answer either and the field is open for new designs, new markets and new approaches.

Information Video
If You Only Do One Thing Today, Watch This Video
This video speaks to one of the most important aspects of your real estate business - information and the creation & organization of it.
Understanding that consumers are seeking, creating and organizing useful information is key to the future of your business.
How can you enhance their experience? How can you tap into these rich resources? Others are providing tools for your potential customers. What tools are you providing? Try these links on for size:

http://www.yourstreet.com/steamboat-springs-coWith 80+% of real estate customers looking for answers online what do you have of true, current & relevant value to offer them when they come knockin’ on your site? Are they coming to you way downstream because others are helping them make sense of information upstream and you’re not?
Those who get this video & embrace it will have an excellent chance to succeed.
Those who don’t will simply create more opportunity for those who do.
You owe it to yourself to spend a few uninterrupted minutes watching. Then, I’d watch it again.

Why can’t the MLS be that way? After all it’s just data. Why do I have to search using the same tired criteria (#bedrooms, #bathrooms…). Why can’t I search by elements that are important to me - morning sun, rural road, pine trees, XYZ school? There are companies out there now trying to figure this out - Google Trullia, Zillow. It’s a shame the NAR isn’t among them. That ultimately hurts you.

Cradle to …err..Cradle - Video
As clients become more and more conscious of our environment, eco-friendly design will become increasingly valuable. This 18 minute video showcases some interesting thinking regarding habitat and product design. The first few minutes are a bit strange to me but it gets better and has a powerful message.
