Video of the Week - Are You a Slasher?

Hello! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed or get updates via email. Thanks for visiting!

Most real estate professionals I meet are slashers. That is they don’t do just one thing. They’re a real estate broker/investor or real estate broker/retail shop owner etc. Get it - the “/” slash?

Slashers are people who have multiple parallel careers whereas a moonlighter has a side gig they work on after hours. One of the authors gives examples of lawyers turned writers & coaches (including herself), a teacher with a modeling career, a computer programmer who also directs a theater, a lawyer who’s also a Baptist minister, Sanjay Gupta, the CNN health correspondent who also does surgery a few times a month, and the list goes on and on.

This is a rather long video(56min) but if you’re trying to play the slasher game it’s worth a look.

Video of the Week - Kick Your Own Ass

Here’s a 2 minute video from one of my favorite authors, Jeffery Gitomer. His get-real approach to business and sales is extremely refreshing. This should be required reading for all real estate professionals.

If you don’t have any of his books, do yourself a favor and pick up a few. I promise you’ll get a ton out of them.

Video of the Week - Your “Strings” Ad

It’s that time of year again where everyone is all in a twit about their Strings magazine ad. Headshots, font styles, ad sharing, the list of things to get done goes on & on.

But before you say yes to that final proof (for this publication or any other) take 60 seconds to watch this video. You’ll be glad you did.

At the risk of giving the video away I’d ask, how does your ad measure up? Given the context of the event and the amount of competing ads is your ad really good enough? Maybe spending sometime reflecting on this video and how it relates to your ad would be time well spent.

Video of the Week - Real Estate Roller Coaster

Really interesting representation of US Home prices adjusted for inflation. Take a ride on a roller coaster as it traces home prices from 1890 to 2007.

Video of the Week - Curious

Interesting perspective from Seth Godin. I’d comment more on this video but I think it’s one of those things that either you get or you don’t.

Video of the Week - How to Design a Newspaper Ad

The Microsoft iPod (2min 54sec)

If you want to make your ads stand out often simpler is better. We see so many Real Estate ads that are cramped, hard to read, and miss the mark in conveying a message. Next time you’re creating an ad, keep this video in mind. In today’s txt-message world, less is more.

Apple makes some of the most sophisticated devices on the planet and yet their marketing approach is so simple, elegant and effective. That is until Microsoft gets in the mix ;-)

Video of the Week - Getting Things Done

Ok it’s the second half of January - how are all the New Year’s resolutions coming along?

If your desk still looks the same, your inbox is still full and your still trying to get it together here is a lifesaver. This guy changed my life a few years ago and his GTD (Getting Things Done) system is sweeping across the globe. This is a fantastic overview video featuring David Allen himself (the creator of GTD) giving a talk at Google.

The video is 45 minutes. If you’ve got a ton on your plate and really want to move the ball forward this year this approach will certainly help.

The one aspect I really like about GTD is you can implement most of the system immediately and receive immediate benefit.

For more info check out these GTD resources:

Video of the Week - The Science of Real Estate

Redfin on the TODAY Show

My take on this is to question conventional thinking (which I think you should be doing all the time anyway). Just because you’ve always done something a certain way doesn’t mean it’s still a valid method. It’s hard to argue with their data. Many times we have assumptions that need to be disgarded or at the very least seriously questioned when the data proves otherwise.

I applaud these guys for sharing their data and causing conversations about what their data means.

You can read more from Redfin’s Science of Real Estate report here.
